Our assessment methods

Many lower limb injuries are caused by faulty biomechanics. Biomechanics, put simply is the motion of the body during activity.

At meditech healthcare we specialise in lower limb mechanics and along with your injury history evaluate whether or not a patients problem is caused by poor biomechanics.

Whilst our physiotherapy team do an excellent job rehabilitating injured athletes, if the issue of what is happening to the lower limb when the foot strikes the ground is not addressed, then weeks of rehab could be in vain.

Our aim is to address biomechanical problems and attempt to correct them using orthotic devices placed in the appropriate sporting shoe, provide relevant stretching & strengthening exercises and provide vital footwear advice.

We find that the vast majority of our patients benefit from our treatments, reducing recovery times and decreasing the incidence of further injury.

Detailed history

At meditech we accurately record your medical history.

Our clinicians feel that the accurate recording of a detailed history of a patients problems is the key to a proper diagnosis and subsequent successful treatment.

Biomechanical instability can often be ascertained just by the history alone. This is not an easy thing to do but our clinician has over ten years experience working with lower limb musculo skeletal problems and has treated thousands of patients.

Biomechanical assessment

Our clinician will examine you standing and sitting, checking all the major joint complexes of the foot ankle and knee. We will also assess your gait whilst walking and note head, shoulder, hip and lower limb alignment.

Video gait analysis

Unlike other practices we do not provide video gait analysis for two reasons;

It is our opinion that running on a treadmill does not accurately reproduce the gait of someone who is running in a natural environment.

If our clinicians wish to see you running they will observe you in the natural environment, outside.

Who we treat

In a nut shell everyone!

We specialise in treating patients who are into sporting activities that involve lower limb motion, whether they are a professional cricketer or a keen amateur runner.

Our clinician also has extensive experience with treating children's biomechanical abnormalities, quite unique to this practice.

Biomechanical development reaches relative maturity by the age of six or seven. Our experience is that screening active children at an early age may help in preventing problems later on in the childrens life. Biomechanical problems are hereditary. If you are suffering from problems, it is probable that your children will too. We offer discounted rates for children as we understand they will grow out of their orthotics quickly. Check our costs page.

We see patients with the following problems;

lower back problems

hip problems

upper leg problems

knee problems

lower leg problems

ankle problems

foot problems

How we treat

We treat our patients in three main ways;

Rehabilitation exercises

In conjunction with any physiotherapy you may be having, we give you a personalised stretching and strengthening regime that targets specific muscle groups to improve biomechanical performance. For examples of our rehab exercises have a look at our injury pages as they include comprehensive exercise programmes for most lower limb injuries.

Orthotics

Many podiatry practices offer casted orthotics. We endeavour not to cast if at all possible. The reason why many practices take casts is because they send away the prescription to be manufactured by a third party, often in another country. This is very expensive and means that the patient ends up paying for this service. This can be many hundreds of pounds. Most prescription services often provide rigid non shock absorbing orthotics which once purchased cannot be altered.

At meditech we manufacture all orthotics in house. They are hand made on a preformed shell by the clinician. When you have a consultation with meditech you are charged a flat fee. If the orthotics are not right for any reason we will alter the prescription free of charge. This is almost unique as most orthotics have to be sent away to be altered.

All our orthotics are manufactured using shock absorbing materials. We never use carbon fibre. Whilst this is an excellent material, ensuring the long life of an orthotic it provides little shock absorbency. When doing sport up to three times your body weight will go through your foot. It is therefore essential that your orthotics provide adequate shock absorbency. Its no coincidence that nike, adidas, reebok, saucony and all other footwear manufacturers do not make their insoles from carbon fibre!

Our guarantee is that if the orthotics are not doing their job we will alter/ replace them at no cost to you. We have built our reputation on our patients being happy, we will not disappoint. Look at our costs page for further information.
